Manage currency conversions
Treasury is being gradually rolled out throughout 2026. Read about Early access. Once enabled, Funds required and Currency conversions are moving from Payments to the Treasury tab. The Payments tab will still include your Manage payments screen to track and approve payments.
- Currency conversions via the Tipalti Hub are only available for US-based payers using Wells Fargo funding.
- Currency conversions with ACH debit are unavailable for PayPalAD payers.
Overview
In the Tipalti Hub, you can fund all your international subsidiaries in one place. This feature allows you to:
- Save the costs associated with multiple wire/ ACH
- Manage all conversions and intercompany balances in one place
- Perform seamless FX (foreign exchange) conversions
- Save time and effort
Currency conversions can be funded by ACH debit transactions, except for PayPal. Tipalti Hub factors FX trades into fund calculations and incorporates them into the ACH debit logic, while updating you with all relevant details in the Convert currency dialog. In addition, activating Auto Top Up will ensure that you have available funds without having to wait for the holding period, reducing payment times even further.
Submit a currency conversion request
Required user role: Finance manager
Required permission: Convert funds
To initiate a currency conversion request:
- In any tab under Payments, click Convert currency to open the Convert currency dialog.
- In the first step, select the Source account from which the funds will be debited. If you have multiple accounts and entities, select the account that you want to use from the dropdown menu.
- Then, enter the Amount that you want to convert.
- Select the Destination account to which the funds will be transferred.
- The Converted amount displays along with the used conversion rate.
- If you want to add another conversion, click the + button at the end of the row and complete the required fields. You can perform multiple conversions in the same process.
- In the second step, review the currency conversion and rates, and click Confirm.
- Once confirmed, you will see a summary of your conversions. Click Close or View Conversions.
- Depending on the currency, Tipalti offers a 1-2 business day SLA for conversion (see Currency cutoffs and validations).
- Once you get a rate, it is locked for you for 2.5 minutes. If you wait longer to confirm the conversion, the rate will be refreshed.
If you don't have sufficient funds in your account for the conversion, you can still confirm it, and the transaction will be initiated as soon as you fund the account. In this case, the rate can't be locked, and it becomes an estimate. You will be requested to fund the transaction with a 2% buffer to allow for rate fluctuations.
If your USD account still won't have enough after the conversion, you can fund it instantly by card using the Fund with Card option shown during the conversion flow.
Currency conversion limitations
There are some limitations when entering the conversion amount.
The minimum conversion amount must be equivalent to 100 USD.The maximum amount must be within the lower limit of the two currencies.

For payers in the UK, EU, and Canada, currency conversions are not currently supported in the Tipalti Hub, but you can convert currencies by submitting a manual request:
- Make sure you have different currency accounts. To open one, contact Tipalti Support. You’ll be able to use currency from one virtual account (e.g., GBP) to fund another virtual account (e.g., EUR).
- Send an email to mfx@tipalti.com with the funds required in each currency account. The email must include the amount and currency you wish to convert from the funding virtual account (e.g., GBP).
-
The instruction should be in the following format:
"Please convert Currency Amount from this virtual account (Account number)
to this virtual account (Account number)." - We’ll do the rest.
The email should include the following details:
- Source: Payer name, Payer entity virtual account name, Amount and currency
- Destination: Payer name, Payer entity virtual account name
- The funding currency will always be the same as the source account's virtual account currency.
- The FX fee will apply and will be deducted from the funding virtual account.
- Manual currency conversion requests are supported only between Citibank funding virtual accounts.
Common questions
Is Currency conversions the same as Multi-FX (MFX)?
Yes. Currency conversions was previously called Multi-FX, or MFX. The feature works the same way under its new name. In the Tipalti Hub, go to Payments > Currency conversions. If Treasury is enabled for your account, you'll find it in the Treasury tab instead.
You may still see the MFX name in some places, such as the mfx@tipalti.com address used for manual conversion requests.
What's the difference between converting currencies and holding currencies in virtual accounts?
Virtual accounts hold your balances. Each one holds funds in a single currency, so you can keep, for example, a GBP balance and an EUR balance side by side and pay payees directly from each.
Currency conversions move funds between those balances. When you convert, Tipalti debits one virtual account and credits another in a different currency, at the exchange rate shown when you confirm.
You need a virtual account in each currency before you can convert into it. If you already hold enough funds in the right currency, you can pay from that balance without converting. To open a new currency account, see Manage virtual accounts.
Why is my currency conversion still pending?
A conversion usually stays in Pending status for one of these reasons:
- Your source account doesn't have enough funds. The conversion starts as soon as you fund the account, including the 2% buffer.
- It's funded by ACH debit. Tipalti waits for the debit to clear before converting. This can take up to 4 business days, not counting the day you submitted the request.
- It was submitted outside conversion hours. Conversions are processed between Sunday 6:00 p.m. and Friday 2:00 p.m. (PT).
Once processing starts, conversions take 1–2 business days, depending on the currency. See Currency cutoffs and validations.
Why is my final rate different from the rate I saw?
The exchange rate is locked for 2.5 minutes. If you confirm after that, the rate refreshes, and the new rate applies.
If you confirm a conversion without enough funds in your source account, the rate can't be locked. The rate you see is an estimate, and the final rate is set when the conversion runs after you fund the account.
